What does science really teach us about homosexuality? It's an important question to consider since so many Christians (and non-Christians) rely on faulty information to make their moral decisions.

TC recommends the following books for individual and group study:

Ex-Gays? A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation by Mark A. Yarhouse and Stanton L. Jones.

Don't let the scholarly title intimidate you; this book is a must-read for all thinking Christians. In addition to reporting their findings from a five year study of Exodus ministry participants, Yarhouse and Jones lay a solid theological foundation for understanding the ministries and those who seek help through them, and they also offer a thorough examination of current and contemporary research on homosexuality.

Homosexuality: The Use of Scientific Research in the Church's Moral Debate - a previous Jones/Yarhouse collaboration that expanded on some of their core themes. An in-depth look at the most reliable scientific research and a discussion of how it should (or should not) shape Christian moral discourse.

Dr. Yarhouse is a professor of psychology at Regent University and also the Director of the Institute for the Study of Sexual Identity. In his book with Lori Burkett, Sexual Identity: A Guide for Living in the Time Between the Times, he argues that sexual orientation is a much too narrow concept and that sexual identity - the life choices one makes in response to same-sex attraction - is a more authentic approach for Christians. Though the book was specifically written for those who have attempted to change their sexual orientation and have met with limited "success," it's an excellent resource for pastors and lay people who want to understand and support the sexual strugglers in their midst.
